Oregon Residents Saving on Insurance With Help from New Law

According to the Division of Insurance, Oregonians saved more than $800,000 in premiums last year with the help of a new law that allows them to request to be re-rated by insurers if they feel their credit score has improved.

Insurance companies around the country routinely take credit information into account when determining how much risk a prospective policyholder poses, which in turn helps determine how much to charge that policyholder for coverage.

Although some coverage providers will check a driver’s credit information first at the initial issuance of a policy and then again at every renewal, Oregon insurers have since 2003 been restricted to using credit information only for new policies. P

Ohio Employees Can Claim Violation of Safety Requirements – VSSR Awards

Normally, workers compensation is considered an exclusive remedy. The employee can not sue the employer and the employer can not deny a claim because of the negligence of the employee. In the monopolistic state of Ohio (meaning the state government is the provider of workers compensation, not private insurance companies) there is a unique law that allows the employee to make a claim directly against the employer for violation of specific safety requirements (VSSR).   Full story…

More Departures from VA Line?

In a recent article by Darla Mercado in Investment News, “Other VA players may follow Genworth out door” she reports on the motivators behind company decisions to leave or reduce their activity in the VA market and low interest rates lead the list. Quoting Clark Troy, an analyst with Aite Group, LLC, the article states: “If we stay in a low-interest-rate environment, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more carriers pull out of or de-emphasize the issuance of variable annuities.”

One of the factors that some analysts looked to as warning signs that carriers are scaling back VAs is the lack of product development. As someone who sees a lot of products before they get filed for approval, I was particularly interested in this piece of the analysis.

New Director at Ohio Department of Insurance

In my post yesterday, I noted that there was no announcement yet of the new director in Ohio. Today the [press release] came: Governor John Kasich has named Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor for the position. Taylor is a CPA and has previously been Auditor of State. Kasich also signed an Executive Order naming Taylor to lead the “Common Sense Initiative”, which he created to transform the state’s regulatory policies. Congratulations to Ms. Taylor. This is a woman with a lot on her plate!
